FARO and TopoDOT Road Survey workflow
Extracting civil/survey deliverables from a road scanned with the FARO Focus3D X 330. Thanks to the folks at TopoDOT for sharing this. They show extracting road, curb and gutter, hillside (DTM), and then the final 3D model.

Best practice for verifying the accuracy of your laser scan registration. Using the Correspondence View in FARO SCENE with Scan Point Clouds, we can use a clipping box to cut slices through the data both vertically and horizontally. This enables us to visually check the accuracy of our scan alignment.

FARO Focus3D Cleaning Tips

Tips for cleaning the optics on your FARO laser scanner. As with any other piece of electronics being used outdoors and in dusty environments, it is a good idea periodically clean the scanner. A simple blast with some canned air will generally do the trick. For a more heavily soiled mirror and/or lens we can use the lint-free optical wipes and optical cleaning fluid.

FARO Focus3D X 330 used to collect accurate as-built information on above ground pipes at petrochemical plant. Light rain on this day, each scan took 7.5 minutes, including taking photographs in the full 360 degrees.
Laser Scanned bridge piles for quality control_rebar elevations

Scanned in less than one hour, bridge piles were laser scanned using the FARO Focus3D X 330. Data registered and geo-referenced in SCENE (15 min) and brought into Bentley InRoads to verify the pile locations compared to the design. From the scan we were also able to identify the elevations of each piece of rebar, identifying the lowest at each pile.

5 scan positions, 10 minutes per scan. Roughly 90 minutes total field time. Scans were registered together with average error between scans 0.009ft (2.8mm). Then geo-referenced to RTK GPS survey control with a max error of 0.04ft.

Hello, you have given good info. In the video i seen ducts insulated with aluminum foils, in scans this king of foils give bad laser scattering. How to process these scans.
Your bridge came out really nice. Couple of notes. The movie app. Pro app that is. Is an app that is roughly $1k add on feature. You can use a free app however the Faro water mark will float around your movie. Also I am curious to your Faro setting. If you did 20 scans in 3 hrs. I would think your setting was 1/5 at 3x. for a 6min and 20 secs. Is this correct? Also where you using the new HDR X330?
